In fact, Charlotte points out in her Prefatory Essay for the 1850 Edition of Wuthering Heights that some critics believed both novels to be written by the same person, since all three Brontë sisters used similar pen names, " the identity of its author was misrepresented it was said that this was an earlier and ruder attempt of the same pen which had produced Jane Eyre.
