We chose the latter picture book version for the visual interpretative analysis.Ī group of magical winged people are taken captive and forced to shed their wings in order to survive the journey from Africa to the American plantations. After the author’s death in 2002, the story “The People Could Fly” was turned into its own picture book that included 30 powerful full color illustrations by Leo and Diane Dillon. The People Could Fly was one of 24 African American folktales retold by Virginia Hamilton in her 1984 book of the same name.
